"If not for the help of the people at 4-C, I probably would not have secured the funding I needed to expand my business. They worked with me and came through with a loan package that was more than acceptable. They also helped me recover after the flood of 2001. They understand the trials of the small business person. I am thankful that this area has this organization."

Highway Infrastructure

The state of West Virginia lays claim to the highest percentage of paved roads per capita in the nation. This fact keeps traffic moving quickly and efficiently. Commute times are low and the accessibility of an interstate highway system running through the New River Gorge Region keeps commercial transportation humming on divided highways.

Vital trade routes including the NAFTA corridor and the Southern Auto Corridor make the area a prime shipping route. A "Freeport" Tax Exemption provides exemption from property taxes for goods in transit to an out-of-state destination when warehoused in West Virginia.

Highways:
I-64 - running west into Kentucky and east to a connection with I-81 in Virginia.
I-77 - running south to Charlotte, North Carolina and north to Cleveland, Ohio.
Corridor L (U.S. Rt. 19) - a north/south divided highway linking I-64/77 to I-79 which continues north on a straight shot to Pittsburgh and boasts the spectacular New River Gorge Bridge, longest single arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere.

Commercial and Passenger Airports

The Raleigh County Memorial Airport is one and one-half miles from I-64, six miles from I-77 and three and one-half miles from Beckley. It features two runways: (1) 5,000' x 100' and (2) 6,750' x 150' with land available to extend to 10,000'. Landing is controlled by an Instrument Landing System (ILS).

The Raleigh County Memorial Airport is "aviation friendly" with four wide open approaches and no restrictions. A Runway Safe Area of 1000' is in place at the end of RW 1 and an FAA AIP project was completed in 2004 providing 1000' on the RW 19 end.

United Airlines provides commercial passenger service and offers 2 daily flights to Washington, DC - Dulles International.  Cargo service is available through FedEx and UPS with daily flights provided.

Yeager Airport, located in Charleston less than an hour away from most places in the New River Gorge, is served by US Airways Express, Delta Connection, Northwest Air Link, United Express, Continental Express and Atlantic Southeast. Daily flights are available to major airports in Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Cleveland, Houston and Washington, DC (Reagan and Dulles).

Rail Transport - Extensive Passenger and Freight Options

West Virginia has a total of 2,488 miles of operating railway, servicing passenger and freight transportation needs. Located within short distances of major population centers, our railway passenger lines provide a stress free, scenic, and convenient means for personal and business commuter travel to, from, and through the state. Our freight lines play a valuable role in the extensive, highly-functional intermodal transportation system, decreasing highway congestions and moving significant amounts of commercial freight in an energy efficient model. We are well situated to move large quantities of goods between the major mid-Atlantic population and industrial centers.

For individuals seeking convenient and affordable business or pleasure transportation in and out of the New River Gorge region, railway commuting is a great option. Amtrak offers passenger train service every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. Service is available at Prince eastbound to Washington, DC and New York, NY with stops in White Sulphur Springs, WV and Charlottesville and Alexandria, VA. Service is available at Prince westbound to Chicago, IL with stops in Charleston and Huntington, WV, Cincinnati, OH and Indianapolis, IN.

On the business development side, the 4-C EDA region is located in the heart of West Virginia, well situated to utilize the New River corridor for convenient freight train transportation. West Virginia’s two freight providers, CSX Transportation (CSXT) and Norfolk Southern (NS) were responsible for moving over 120,000,000 tons of freight out of the state and over 37,000,000 tons into the state in 2002 alone. The freight transportation infrastructure is well suited for commercial transportation.
