Fayette County, with a population of 46,341, is the 12th largest county in West Virginia.  It is an activity center for outdoor sports and the recognized hub of the state's whitewater rafting industry.  The City of Fayetteville serves as the county seat.

Fayette County is home to the New River Gorge Bridge, officially the world's second longest single arch bridge and featured on the WV quarter.  During the annual October Bridge Day Festival, the bridge is closed to vehicle traffic and thousands of tourists flock to Fayetteville to watch intrepid BASE jumpers make the leap into the New River Gorge.  Besides the NRG Bridge, Fayette County boasts one of "America's top ten small towns," rafting on the New River,
