Fayette County, WV has been chosen to be the new home of the National Boy Scout Jamboree
The Boys Scouts of America hold a National Jamboree every four years. It has been held at Fort AP Hill in Virginia in the past, but in 2013, the Jamboree will move to the New River Gorge. Approximately 40,000 Boy Scouts attend a BSA Jamboree, while tens of thousands of other outside participants can also be expected to attend. The new facility is going to rest within 10,000+ acres on the site formerly known as "Garden Ground" in Glen Jean, WV, between Mt. Hope and Oak Hill. Efforts are also underway to bring the 2019 World Scout Jamboree to Fayette County.
Aside from the Jamboree influx every four years, The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve will also serve the Scouts and consequently, the region in many other capacities. It will serve the Boy Scouts as a year round high adventure camp, somewhat similar to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, but with new programs, activities, and approaches to outdoor recreation and enviornmental stewardship.
Additionally, the Reserve will serve in new capacities to improve and promote scouting. Although a complete plan is not fully developed, the opportunitunities and possibilities are limitless. This is good news for West Virginia, the New River Gorge Region and the Boy Scouts of America.
