Summers County, with a population of 13,976, was ranked 40th in the state as of 2002. Hinton, the county seat, had a population of 2,843.

A rural county, Summers continues to grow as a tourism destination with such attractions as Bluestone Lake and Pipestem State Park. With aggressive leadership, Hinton has experienced substantial growth within the mid-level technology sector through the location of new companies that include Computer Sciences Corporation, ManTech International, TSM Corporation and PracticeLink.

The county was recently identified by the Appalachian Regional Commission as a county in transition. Top employers include the Summers County Board of Education and Appalachian Regional Hospital.
