Raleigh County, with a population of 79,148, is the 6th largest county in West Virginia. The City of Beckley, with a population of 18,296, is the largest municipality in Raleigh County. It is estimated that the population grows to about 225,000 during the day as surrounding county residents commute into Raleigh for jobs, services and shopping.
In recent years the economy of the City of Beckley and Raleigh County has been stimulated by easy access provided by the road transportation system. As a result, Raleigh County is a regional hub for shopping and services in southern West Virginia.
The area is diversified and not dominated by one industry. Top employers in the county are the Raleigh County Board of Education, Raleigh General Hospital and Wal-Mart.
