Raleigh County is a convenient, interesting and safe place to live and visit - convenient because many amenities are available within a short drive, interesting because of the rich choice of entertainment options and safe because West Virginians have enjoyed one of the lowest crime rates in the nation for nearly half a century.

A growing mix of shopping and services choices is available while new housing starts are on the rise providing new housing options. Medical care is provided through three hospitals and numerous clinics. With the cost of living and cost of medical care below the national average, Raleigh County is an affordable place to live and work.

A variety of lodging accommodations from wilderness campsites to resort suites provide a base from which to explore the region where entertainment is available for all ages and interests. Fast food and fine dining options abound within a leisurely drive.

For the adventurous, extreme sports entertainment available to Raleigh County includes rafting on the New and Gauley Rivers, the “best whitewater on the East Coast”; kayaking; snow skiing at Winterplace; water skiing and scuba diving at area lakes; rock climbing; mountain biking and exploring the Hatfields and McCoys ATV Trail. Other sporting options include guided trips for spin and fly fishing; boating; hunting either on preserves or private properties; golfing; and hiking through National Park Services lands.

County, state and national parks provide abundant opportunities for family outings at Grandview, Little Beaver and Lake Stephens. The National Park Service attracts more than one million visitors per year to the areas of the New River Gorge National River, Gauley River National Recreation Area and Bluestone National Scenic River.

Unique to Raleigh County is Tamarack. As described by their website “Tamarack is the nation’s first and only statewide collection of handmade craft, art and cuisine showcasing The Best of West Virginia.” Tamarack provides cuisine from the Greenbrier Resort along with regional specialty foods and products. Entertainment includes performances, craft demonstrations and theatre.

Theatre West Virginia offers the outdoor dramas HATFIELDS AND MCCOYS the story of the notorious Appalachian feud and HONEY IN THE ROCK, the nation’s oldest Civil War drama from June to August each year. A variety of theatrical productions are provided by surrounding communities.

From soccer competitions to the Coalfields Classic, from Little League to Fridays in the Park, Raleigh Countians focus on friends, co-workers and family.
